Aangan is a free community platform for Pakistan. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. It is written plainly on purpose.
Who we are
Aangan is operated by Sami Adeel, based in Karachi, Pakistan. Contact: aangan.karachi@gmail.com
What we collect
When you create an account
- Your email address
- A display name you choose
- A password, which we never see — it is hashed by our authentication provider
Optionally, if you provide it
- Your city and area
- A short bio
- A profile photo
- A phone number, if you choose to verify one
When you post a listing
- Photographs you upload
- The description and details you write
- The city and area you specify
When you message someone
- The content of your messages
Automatically
- Approximate location, only if you grant permission, and only to show nearby places on the map. We do not store it.
- Basic error reports if the app crashes. These contain no message content and no personal details.
What we do not collect
- We do not use advertising trackers
- We do not sell or share your data with anyone
- We do not collect your contacts, photos outside what you upload, or your browsing outside Aangan
- We do not store your precise location
Why we collect it
- Your email — so you can sign in and recover your account
- Verification — so we can keep fake accounts and scammers off the platform
- Listings and photos — so other people can see what you are offering
- Messages — so you can arrange handovers without sharing your phone number publicly
- Location — only to sort map results by distance
We do not use your data for anything else. There is no advertising on Aangan and there never will be.
Who can see what
Public, to anyone
- Your display name
- Your city
- Your listings once approved, including photos
- Your count of successful handovers
Private, only to you
- Your email address
- Your phone number
- Your saved items
- Your messages, visible only to you and the person you are messaging
- Your adoption applications, visible only to you and the person rehoming the animal
Visible to our moderators
- Listings pending review
- Reports filed about a listing or a person
- Messages, only when investigating a report
How long we keep it
- Your account — until you delete it
- Listings — until you remove them, or 12 months after being marked completed
- Messages — until either person deletes their account
- Reports — 24 months, so we can identify repeat offenders
- Error logs — 90 days
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete my account in the app, or by emailing aangan.karachi@gmail.com.
When you delete:
- Your listings are removed immediately
- Your photos are deleted
- Your name, city, bio and contact details are erased
- Messages you sent are blanked out in other people's conversations, since deleting them entirely would leave the other person with no context
Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.
Your rights
You can:
- See what data we hold about you — email us and we will send it
- Correct anything wrong — edit it in your profile, or email us
- Delete your account and data — from Settings, or by emailing us
- Withdraw location permission — in your phone's settings, at any time
Children
Aangan is not intended for people under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
Security
- All connections use HTTPS
- Passwords are hashed, never stored in readable form
- Access to your data is enforced at the database level, not just in the app
- Every listing is reviewed by a person before it appears publicly
No system is perfectly secure. If you discover a vulnerability, please email aangan.karachi@gmail.com rather than disclosing it publicly.
Where your data is stored
On servers operated by Supabase, located in Singapore. This means your data may be processed outside Pakistan.
Changes
If we change this policy meaningfully, we will say so in the app. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
